SEO, AEO, GEO: three ways to be visible in the age of hybrid search

SEO, AEO e GEO

From traditional search to generative engines: today, visibility is played out on multiple levels. Understanding the differences between SEO, AEO and GEO is the first step towards building a truly effective strategy.

The evolution of digital search

For years, the logic was linear: a user enters a query into a search engine, obtains a list of results and chooses where to click.

Today, this model is fragmenting. Alongside traditional engines, artificial intelligence-based assistants and direct-answer systems that synthesise information from multiple sources have become established. The result is a hybrid ecosystem in which a brand’s visibility no longer depends on a single channel, but on multiple levels of “informational presence”.

Let us now look at the main differences between SEO, AEO and GEO and how they fit into this new scenario.

SEO: the foundation of online visibility

The SEO (Search Engine Optimization) remains the foundation of digital visibility. Its objective is to position content and pages in the organic results of search engines such as Google.

In the dental and pharmaceutical sectors, SEO is still central for intercepting searches related to specific products, technologies and solutions. Optimising content means working on keywords, page structure, domain authority and content quality.

In summary, SEO responds to a clear logic: being found when someone is actively searching for something.

AEO: being the answer, not just a result

The AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) represents an evolution of SEO. It is no longer only about ranking among the results, but about becoming the direct answer to a question.

This is particularly evident with the introduction of featured snippets, information boxes and voice systems. Content optimised for AEO is structured in such a way as to answer specific user questions clearly, concisely and immediately.

In the healthcare context, this means, for example, providing precise definitions, technical explanations and targeted answers that can be extracted directly by search engines or voice assistants.

GEO: visibility in generative engines

The GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the most recent level of this evolution. It refers to the ability of a piece of content or a brand to be used as a source in generative artificial intelligence systems, such as ChatGPT or Gemini.

Unlike SEO and AEO, here it is not only about ranking or answering, but about being cited within an AI-generated answer.

This introduces a new dynamic: content must not only be optimised for keywords or questions, but also structured in such a way as to be easily interpreted by language models, clear in its definitions and semantically coherent.

Differences and overlaps between the three models

SEO, AEO and GEO are not alternatives to one another, but different levels of the same ecosystem.

• The SEO concerns visibility in traditional search engines

• The AEO concerns the ability to provide direct and immediate answers

• The GEO concerns presence in answers generated by artificial intelligence

These models overlap more and more often. Well-structured content can simultaneously rank on Google, be extracted as an answer and be used by an AI system as an informational source.

How to integrate them into a single strategy

For companies in the dental and pharmaceutical sectors, the key is not to choose between SEO, AEO and GEO, but to build an integrated strategy. An effective approach includes:

• Structured and in-depth content for SEO

• Clear and question-based sections to intercept AEO

• Precise, coherent and semantic language for GEO

In practice, the same content can be designed on multiple levels: attracting traffic, answering questions and becoming a source for AI systems. This approach is particularly relevant in technical sectors, where informational clarity and content authority are decisive factors.

Visibility is no longer a single-level game. SEO, AEO and GEO represent three layers of the same ecosystem in which companies compete not only to be found, but to be understood and cited.

In modern marketing, especially in highly complex sectors such as dental and pharmaceutical, the difference is no longer made only by ranking, but by the ability to be present at every point where the answer is formed.

If you are not also inside the answer, you are not inside the choice.
